« HOW MANY YEARS CAN SOME PEOPLE EXIST? | Main | LOOKING OUT FOR NUMBER 1 »

A WORLD THAT BECKONS LIKE A LIBERATION

there's a certain magical quality when you come home in a bicycle at two o'clock in the morning. your legs are aching after a four hour road trip around the island but you're still pumped up. you're so happy that you don't want the day to end just yet. you still want to go out and cruise till sunrise. but you really can't because you already stink and the shower beckons.

ayos ba? matagal ko na kasing gustong sabihin yung phrase na "there's a certain magical quality" sa blog kaya sinimulan ko ang entry na may pa-ingles-ingles ng kaunti. hehehe. pilit ko lang i-romanticize and balakang kong masakit. sumama kasi ako sa isang bike trip kaninang madaling araw, kasama ang mga ilang native bikers ng singapore. first time ko itong mag long trip by bike. medyo apprehensive nga ako at first kasi di ko sigurado kung kaya ko dahil ako'y 39 na and an ex-smoker (who smoked for more than 20 years if i might add). pero nakaya ko. bwahahahaha. apat na oras na pagbibisikleta. packingsheet, nakaya ko. ayamso beriberiprawd opmayselp.

paano ba ako nasama sa biking group na ito? kung naalala ninyo, nag upgrade ako ng bike 2 weeks ago. may grupo ng bikers ang shop na binilhan ko. pag bumili ka ng model that is of a certain quality and price, aayain kang maging member ng club nila. ganon nga ang nangyari sa akin. may kasamang handshake at invitation to join after binigay sa akin ang resibo ng bisikleta ko. they meet every saturday evening around 9:30 PM sa whitesands mall. kung familiar kayo sa pasir ris area, this is the mall right beside the train station.

mga 15 kaming bumyahe kagabi. tatlong malay, labingisang intsik at isang cute na pinoy (ako yon! ngyahahaha!). teka lang ha: 3+11+1 = 15... tama. hehe. sinisigurado ko lang ang pagbilang. engineer ako at nakakahiya ang magkamali sa aritmitik. heniwey, mababait sila at inalalayan ako ng husto. mayron parating naka trail sa akin (ang pinakabagong member at pinakamabagal). dalawa sa grupo namin kagabi ay babae at iniwan ako ng dalawang bruha, as if they were saying: "eat my dust, you male pig that is called a 'boar' in english". hekshuli, nakakasabay naman ako. lalo na pag sa patag na lugar. pero gardemet, hingal ako (to the point of near exhaustion dokleng epeks) pag paakyat ng mga flyover. di ko alam kung dahil sa age or dahil mas maganda ang quality ng bike ng mga kasama ko. perhaps both. yung nag-aalalay nga sa akin eh around $3000 daw ang halaga ng bike niya. sabi ko sa english eh: "putangina, kamahal naman. ano bang pedal niyan? ginto?" (or words to that effect).

all in all, enjoy talaga ako. at hindi ako nagbibiro: there is a certain magical quality. perhaps it's the exhilaration of cruising the deserted roads of singapore in the early morning. iba kasi ang pakiramdam mo pag nakasakay ka sa bisikleta. the ride in itself is different than riding in a car for instance, because the wind's on your face and you feel really free. the sounds are different as well. it's as if everything's rushing towards you. and as soon as it comes, it fades away completely just as fast. for a godless prick like me, the experience was almost religious. naalala ko tuloy yung quote ni einstein about the "world that beckons like a liberation". my early morning bike trip with these srangers was that kind of experience for me.

next saturday, barring any other commitment, sasama ulit ako sa kanila.

Comments

I wish I could do that too, Batjay.

hi paul.

it was really an experience for me. siguro dahil madaling araw ang cycling namin, there was a dream like quality to it. siguro din, dahil walang tao at sasakyan sa kalye ay medyo eerie yung experience.

GAling mo naman pal, cnsidering that it was your first outing.

Off topic: I was listening to your tape again this morning and bigla ko lang naisip mag-request. Lam mo ba yung kantang, "The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?" ni Gordon Lightfoot? Alam mo ba yun?

hey tito rolly!

may major alalay galing sa mga kasama ko. pride lang siguro, but there was a time last night where i wanted to flag a taxi ang go home. hehe. i was really tired.

di ko alam ang kanta pero i've probably heard it before. nag search ako as lyrics ngayon lang, mukhang mahirap kantahin ah... may mga tongue twister words. pero subukan natin i-jam sa maynila next month.

fafa, i'm so proud of you! I could just imagine how exhilirating that is. Keep it up!

You know what's great about this experience you had mylab? It's the way you lived in the moment. There will be people who would have focused on the difficulty, the pain and the exhaustion, but not you. You were right there for the fun and the magic.

Life is, indeed, what you make it. And it's no wonder why our life is beautiful. Note that I didn't say easy... but it's beautiful nonetheless.

I'm so proud of you too.

Labyu!

Ooppsss... I was reading back on my comment and I don't think it came out right.

I don't mean to say that our life is difficult. On the contrary, since day 1, everything you've done has been geared towards making a good life for us and you've done remarkably well mylab.

Just that, in general, life itself is not easy and no matter how good you try to make it, there will always be problems and difficulties coming up.

Ang kagandahan nga lang saken, I'm living this life with you and easy or not, it's been beautiful and good all the way.

Labyu ulit! :)

hay naku... my mountaineering friends have mostly switched na nga din to biking eh

even my brother has bought himself a bike and is now acting all sporty every morning at manila bay...

don't think i'd ever do it tho... tama na yung laki ng hips, thighs and binti ko :D

hindi ko pa na-try mag-biking kahit minsan. exhilarating kamo? hmm...maybe i should try it out.

Wow! Sir...tamang-tama ang topic, gusto kong i-try ang biking dito sa Sg, in fact nag-inquire ako lat week pero wala kong idea kung magkano ang bike na medyo ok ang quality...tips naman kasi gusto ko na talagang bumili, most probably for intermediate user, magkano kaya? Nangangati na itlog ko sa kasabikan...hehehe. TY!

hi raine. love your name.

you should try it out because it really is a fun way to workout. i hate gyms because you're confined to a room - too boring for me. now the problem is finding a group and a place. this is a bit difficult dahil there aren't too many female bikers in manila. but i guess there are groups out there and you only have to find out.

cheers!
jay

hi mec.

maganda nga mag bike sa manila bay sa umaga. mas maganda siguro pag sunset ano? biking over a world famous sunset sa manila bay on an evening in february. yan ang pangarap ko.

oo nga ninang.

kaya kahapon, nag praktis akong umakyat sa may bulubundukin doon sa amin - road ito na mataas on the way to the beach.

wala. bigo ako. mabagal pa rin. kaunti pa sigurong ensayo. pero salamat sa iyong "i'm so pround of you". gagalingan ko pa.

sige MelissaP.

may malapit bang hospital doon sa bundok diyan sa aleman land? sinisigurado ko lang, just in case matuloy kami ni jet. ngyehehe. masarap siguro diyang mag bisikleta ano kasi talagang great outdoors. dito sa maliit na isla, maligaya ka na dapat sa paunting incline na gawa sa concrete.

wow sarap naman, you might not believe it, but i just learned how to bike last january(ewan ko ba, nalaglag kasi yung ate ko dati sa kanal, nung bata pa kami, sa unang bike nya kaya tuloy pati ako di na natuto). and sa ngayon nag-eenjoy lang ako sa mga county parks dito sa bay area. sarap siguro makapag bike ng 4 hours?!?! longest ko e 1 hour at isang linggo kong naramdaman ang sakit ng katawan :-) but its really a great way to exercise.

TY sir, I'll try to contact you pag decided na kong bumili. Bad luck or di nag-iingat? Sabagay, superhero ka naman...hehehe! Ingat pa din!

hi haydee.

di naman ako nagtataka na ngayon ka lang natutong mag bisikleta. may mga kaibigan ako na hanggang ngayon ay di marunong mag bisikleta. hindi naman sila nahulog sa kanal tulad ng ate mo. mahirap lang sila nung sila ay growing up at walang pambili ng bisikleta ang magulang nila. pero ngayon asensado na sila at may mga sarili nang pamilya. they used to work under me before and i am very proud of them.

mas masarap mag bike diyan sa inyo sa bay area dahil maganda ang weather. even in summer it's cool so you won't get tired that easy. ingat lang at marami atang muggers diyan sa inyo.

cheers!

mag ingat nga lang: kaya dapat may helmet, strobe lights para sa gabi (both front and back ng bike). follow the traffic rules and be sensible, smart and use your peripheral vision at all times.

hello mylabopmayn!

thanks very much for your comment - it is true isn't it. the secret to a great life is not to focus on the difficulty or the pain and the exhaustion. not to focus on the fears lest it stifle us. to be there for the fun and the magic - that's what's important.

ingat ka rin at lab U!
jay

fafajei... usual scenario na sa Baywalk yan, people jogging, playing badminton or cycling... they've made it conducive na talaga for such... kahit anong oras (some kasi exercise at night, para nga naman nde taxing sa skin)

ahehe... i guess if you just bike from time to time, nde masyado ang impact sa body... but my women biker friends can attest to the fact na their thighs really became bigger :D eh masyado pa akong kikay to commit to that...

(and ayaw ni Jojo considering daw the things that can only happen to me :D )

things that can only happen to you... naku. accident prone ka ba?

Hi Kuya Jay! Salamat po sa note. =) Medyo busy lang ako lately. Hayyy.

Hehehe. Dahil siguro sanay na sanay ako mag-bike. Miss ko na nga eh. Ala kasi akong bike rito sa campus.

Ingat and kumusta! =)

Bike, scooter, motorcycle. O kahit dalawang sets ng multiple wheels (rollerskates, rollerblades).

Siguro, wala lang talaga akong sense of balance. Paano bang natututo mag-bike?
